WOP-20L serial production – new outdoor access point by Eltex

29 December 2022 Serial production of Eltex WOP-20L — outdoor access point supporting Wi-Fi 5 standard has started. Its purpose is to create wireless network in areas with high client density, for example, in parks, at stadiums, and construction sites.

Housing and interfaces

WOP-20L is an all-weather access point. Durable housing effectively protects the device from harsh environmental conditions. Dust, rain and snow are unable to harm the device due to IP55 ingress protection. WOP-20L has a built-in passive cooling radiator for effective removal of excess heat. Operating temperature range – from –45 °C to +60 °C.
WOP-20L connects to network via gigabit port using Ethernet cable. Data and power are provided over the same wire due to PoE support.
At the top of the case there are four SMA-connectors for antennas. Depending on the tasks, the following antennas can be connected to the WOP-20L:
  • directional (sector, panel, etc.) — to narrow coverage area, increase the signal propagation range and segmentation in places with a high density of devices;
  • omnidirectional (circular) — for wide coverage area and shorter signal range.

Technical features

WOP-20L operates in two bands simultaneously — in 2.4 and 5 GHz. Receivers sensitivity is –91 and –94 dBm, transmitters power is 18 and 20 dBm respectively. Performance — 1,1 Gbps (up to 300 Mbps for 2.4 GHz, up to 867 Mbps for 5 GHz).
WOP-20L adopts MIMO 2×2 antenna configuration. Due to multithreaded data transmission, the channel bandwidth increases: more devices can be connected and each of them can be provided with a stable signal. Recommended maximum number of connections to one point is 50 devices.

Seamless roaming

Using several WOP-20L, a seamless wireless network according to the IEEE 802.11r/k/v standard can be created. When moving from the coverage area of one access point to the area of another, reconnection will be invisible to the user and will not affect content consumption. Thus, it is possible to create a seamless roaming network to cover a large area.

Authorization and security

Thanks to the Eltex SoftWLC software controller, RADIUS and Captive Portal authorization systems are implemented.
Using RADIUS server, access is configured using an individual dynamic key (EAP-TLS) or login and password (EAP-PEAP). This will help to protect the network from unauthorized access from the outside, and to individualize access.
Captive Portal is used for users’ authorization in public wireless networks, for example, through outgoing or incoming call or SMS. This is necessary to comply with user registration laws (laws and policies may vary by country).
Security of wireless connection is ensured by WPA/WPA2 and WPA/WPA2 Enterprise protocols. WOP-20L allows creating up to 14 virtual access points, and for each it will configure individual access settings for different user groups.

Management, configuration and update

SoftWLC allows managing, flexibly configuring and updating WOP-20L via NETCONF protocol. WOP-20L can also be managed using Telnet, SSH, CLI and web interface.
