Guide to Eltex Wi-Fi 6 access points for indoor and outdoor applications

Introduction
While we await the release of new Wi-Fi 7 enterprise solutions by Eltex (coming very soon), we'll tell you about our Wi-Fi 6 access point lineup, which we have been developing and manufacturing for over three years. Our Wi-Fi 6 products have reached a high level of maturity and broad application coverage, and we're going to implement the next-generation standard in new products.
IEEE 802.11ax, also known as Wi-Fi 6, has been widely accepted in corporate environments for several years and has become the standard for companies requiring greater bandwidth and connectivity capabilities beyond previous Wi-Fi generations. The key advantage of Wi-Fi 6 is not only its speed but also its highly efficient traffic management in dense client environments.
We will focus on four Eltex Wi-Fi 6 access points for general corporate tasks: two models are intended for indoor applications (WEP-3L and WEP-30L) and the other two for outdoor applications (WOP-30L and WOP-30LS). This overview will not cover specialized Eltex solutions, such as the industrial WOP-30LI and explosion-proof WOP-3L-EX access points. You can learn more about them in our publications here and here.
Let's begin with general aspects.
Unified technological core
Regardless of the specific model, all Wi-Fi 6 devices we produce support the key technologies of this standard:
- OFDMA. The access point can communicate with multiple devices simultaneously, dynamically distributing frequency "resource units" within a single channel. This reduces latency and improves overall spectrum efficiency, especially with a large number of connected devices.
- MU-MIMO. By using multiple antennas, the access point can simultaneously transmit data to (or receive data from) multiple clients on the same frequency, but through different spatial streams.
- 1024QAM. Increases the data density in the radio signal, which results in increased speed in the coverage area.
Wi-Fi 6 technologies supported by Eltex access points work together to optimize the radio air, connect more clients through a single access point, and provide stable access and greater bandwidth to each of them.
The special attention has been paid to seamless roaming support, which enables the integration of Eltex indoor and outdoor access points into a unified space. This allows customers to maintain continuous connectivity and high data transfer rates while moving across the entire facility, that is critical for reliable operation of VoIP and other services.
The entire lineup of Eltex Wi-Fi 6 access points supports a full set of standards required for continuous connectivity:
- IEEE 802.11r ensures fast client switching from one access point to another;
- IEEE 802.11k helps client device to identify the best access point for connection;
- IEEE 802.11v optimizes this process by prompting the device to switch to a less congested node. This ensures uninterrupted access as the user moves across the facility.
Regardless of the model you choose, the Eltex Wi-Fi 6 access point lineup provides a full range of up-to-date security tools:
- Range of security protocols such as WPA2/WPA3 Personal and Enterprise, OWE.
- IEEE 802.1x client authentication via RADIUS server for centralized access control, including integration with existing Active Directory infrastructure.
- Network segmentation. Models support creation of up to 14 virtual access points for different user groups and tasks.
- Client isolation. It prevents direct client-to-client interactions, increasing security within the local network and reducing unnecessary traffic.
We’ve covered the common features applicable to all the access points under consideration. Now, let’s focus on the detailed overview of specific solutions.
For various office tasks
Let's begin with the WEP-3L model. This is an affordable corporate solution designed for companies where Wi-Fi is essential but not a business-critical service.
The key model feature is its hybrid approach to standards: in the 2.4 GHz band, the device operates on Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n), delivering a maximum throughput of up to 300 Mbit/s with 2×2 MIMO antenna configuration.
The primary frequency band for connecting modern devices, such as smartphones and laptops, is 5 GHz. Within this band, WEP-3L supports key Wi-Fi 6 technologies, including MU-MIMO 2×2 and OFDMA, with a bandwidth of up to 80 MHz and a protocol-compliant throughput of up to 1201 Mbps. A gigabit port with PoE support is used for network connectivity.
If you need to provide employees with access to the company's local network or the internet for email, messaging apps, and cloud services without overpaying for unused capacity, WEP-3L is an ideal choice. The access point offers more than enough capabilities to support comfortable, concurrent usage by approximately 40 users.
When we refer to WEP-30L, we're talking about high-density environments. Conference rooms, business center lobbies, and lecture halls are all places where multiple devices need to access the network simultaneously and ensure the stable operation of critical services. To achieve this, WEP-30L leverages a range of sixth-generation technologies (OFDMA, 1024QAM, etc.) in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands.
The total theoretical throughput reaches 1.7 Gbps, a 2.5 Gigabit port with PoE support is used for connection to the corporate network.
The recommended number of concurrent connections is up to 80 client devices, each of which is provided with high data transfer rate and stable operation.
Let’s go outside
Deploying outdoor Wi-Fi is always a challenge. Here, the equipment should withstand a wide range of environmental factors including extreme temperature fluctuations, rain, snow, intense sunlight, and complex radio conditions.
The outdoor Wi-Fi 6 lineup includes 2 devices having similar core electronics but solving fundamentally different tasks due to their antenna configuration.
The key feature of WOP-30L is the absence of built-in antennas. To connect external antennas, the top part of the enclosure is equipped with four SMA connectors — two for each frequency band (2.4 and 5 GHz, respectively).
Depending on the type of antennas connected, WOP-30L can solve a variety of tasks. This flexibility makes WOP-30L an excellent choice not only for standard locations like corporate outdoor areas, but also for more challenging environments: watchtowers, complex industrial areas, stadiums, city festival zones, and more. Install omnidirectional whip antennas and you'll achieve coverage of a park or public gardens. Connect narrow-beam sector antennas and you can "punch through" a long alley or create coverage on a stadium stand or in a large hangar.
The access point features reliable IP55 dust and moisture protection and is designed to operate in harsh climates ranging from –45°C to +65°C. A 2.5 Gigabit port with PoE/PoE+ support is used for network connection. The total throughput for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands is up to 1.7 Gbps. The recommended number of connected clients is 50.
Precise zoning for special areas
WOP-30LS is a ready-made, complete solution for a specific type of task. The "S" in the model name indicates a built-in sector antenna. Its beam angle is 55° x 40° (H/W). Some useful cases are described below.
Imagine a warehouse complex with tall metal racks. Metal is an enemy of Wi-Fi, it creates numerous reflections that kill useful signal. The directional beam of WOP-30LS allows illuminating exactly your target, minimizing unwanted reflections.
Another scenario is a stadium or concert venue. If you install regular access points, they will "hear" each other and interfere with each other. The sector antennas of WOP-30LS allow dividing the stands into sectors, where each access point serves its own group of spectators without interfering with its neighbors. This significantly increases network capacity.
There are numerous use cases, where this solution is applicable. WOP-30LS is indispensable for linear objects, such as long pipelines, roads, and power lines.
The WOP-30LS enclosure is even more rugged than WOP-30L, its ingress protection is IP65. The temperature range is the same from -45 to +65°C. Like WOP-30L, it has a 2.5G port with PoE/PoE+ and Wi-Fi 6 technologies support for handling multiple clients: the recommended number is up to 50 per access point.
Ecosystem by Eltex
Access points are only half the battle, especially in sites with multiple installations. And in such cases, proper management is essential. The strength of Eltex Wi-Fi solutions is the ecosystem.
All the models described — both indoor and outdoor — are integrated into a single managed ecosystem. The key element here is the Wi-Fi controller — the hardware WLC, and the software vWLC and SoftWLC. These controllers make it easy to manage large infrastructures, configure and implement services such as the aforementioned seamless roaming, WIDS/WIPS for threat detection and prevention, and much more.
Additionally, to ensure full functionality across the company's entire network infrastructure, Wi-Fi solutions integrate with the ECCM equipment management system for centralized monitoring and entire infrastructure control and the NAICE NAC-system, which ensures strict access control (authentication, authorization) and enforces security policies for each connected device.
You can learn more about their role in the infrastructure in the solutions section on the website.
